If you live in the United Kingdomand want to renew your Dutch passport or ID card or apply for one for the first time, follow this step-by-step plan.

Step 1: Collect your documents (checklist)

You need a number of documents to apply for a passport or ID card. Answer the questions in the checklist to find out which documents you need to take to your appointment and what conditions apply. Please print the checklist and bring it with you to your appointment.

Attention: If you are also applying for a passport or ID card for your spouse/partner and/or child, please print a separate checklist for each applicant.

Step 2: Make an appointment

Once you have gathered all of your documents and ensured they meet all the required conditions, make an appointment at the application location. If you are applying for a passport and an ID card, make a separate appointment for each application. Make separate appointments for any additional documents you want to apply for. If you want to apply for a passport or ID card together with your spouse/partner and/or children, indicate that multiple people will attend the appointment together.

Attention: If your Dutch passport or ID card is with the Home Office, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or Student Finance, ask them to return it to you. You cannot apply for a new passport or ID card without it.

Appointment in the United Kingdom

Warning:

Are you not able to hand over all documents specified in your checklist? Then your application is not complete. Within 3 weeks you will be notified that you have to collect the missing documents for your application. You also need to schedule a new appointment and submit the missing documents personally.

There are a few documents that all applicants must submit. If one or more of these documents are missing, you will be notified right away that you will have to schedule a new appointment.
This applies to the following documents:

  • Application form (fully completed and signed)
  • If you are applying for a passport or ID card for your child: Consent Form (fully completed and signed) including a copy of the passport, with a signature and the date, of the parent that is not present at the appointment
  • All Dutch and foreign passports and ID cards that you have

Make an appointment at the Embassy in London

After making an appointment it will be confirmed by email. The email will contain a link you can use to change or cancel your appointment.

VFS Global in London

In most cases, you can also make an appointment to submit your application with VFS Global. VFS Global is an external service provider. Their locations have longer opening times than the embassy. Please be aware that a service fee will be charged on top of the consular fee.

You can skip steps 3 and 4.

Attention: If your passport or identity card is lost or stolen and you do not have a copy of it, you cannot submit your application through VFS Global. Make an appointment online with the embassy in London.

In most cases, you can make an appointment to submit your application with VFS Global in Edinburgh. VFS Global is an external service provider. Their locations have longer opening times than the embassy in London. Please be aware that a service fee will be charged on top of the consular fee.

The consular team from the Dutch embassy in London will be visiting Newcastle, where you will be able to apply for a Dutch passport or ID card.

17 and 18 June 2024

  • Make an appointment online with the embassy in London
  • Choose 'Travel document at a location other than the embassy'.
  • Make a separate appointment for each request.
  • If the appointment system says ‘no appointments available’ it means that all available slots have already been booked.
  • After making your appointment, the embassy will provide you with more information about your appointment and the exact location.
  • You can skip steps 3 and 4.

Surcharge

There is an additional fee of € 25,40 if you apply for a passport or ID card at this location.

The consular team from the Dutch embassy in London will be visiting York, where you will be able to apply for a Dutch passport or ID card.

When?

30 September and 1 October 2024

There is an additional fee of € 25,40 if you apply for a passport or ID card at this location.

The consular team from the Dutch embassy in London will be visiting Exeter, where you will be able to apply for a Dutch passport or ID card.

Appointment in the Netherlands

You can submit your passport or ID card application at a border municipality in the Netherlands. If you wish to do this, you can skip steps 3 and 4.

  • Apply for a passport or ID card at a Dutch border municipality

You can submit your passport or ID card application at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. If you wish to do this, you can skip steps 3 and 4.

Step 3: Go to your appointment

You must submit your passport or ID card application in person. Even applicants under 18 must appear in person.

Bring all the documents on your personal checklist. For every document the checklist will show you whether you need to provide the original and/or a photocopy.

If you needed to have documents legalised and/or translated, bring the legalised and translated versions with you as well.

Applying for a passport or ID card at a Dutch border municipality or at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport will cost you less.

No. If you need your current passport or ID card while your application is being processed, you can retain it for the time being.

When do I have to hand in my old passport or ID card?

If you are collecting your new passport or ID card in person, you should hand in your old one when you come to collect it.

If you are having your passport or ID card sent to you, you will need to first send your old one to the embassy or consulate-general. Only then will your new passport or ID card be sent to you. This means that there will be a period when you have no passport or ID card. If you want your old passport or ID card back, inform the embassy or consulate-general.

I have a residence permit or visa in my old passport, what should I do?

If your passport contains visas or a residence permit and you want to keep those pages intact, inform staff of this when you submit your old passport.

Step 4: Collect your passport or ID card or have it sent to you

When your passport will be ready depends on your personal situation and the documents you had to submit with your application.
Due to busy times, it is possible that processing your application may take up to about 6 weeks. We will do our best to process your application as soon as possible.
We ask you to be patient and wait at least 6 weeks before contacting us about the status of your application.

You must collect your new passport or ID card within 3 months or have it sent to you. After that, it will be destroyed.

Embassy in London

You can collect your new passport or ID card on the following days:

  • Monday: 10:00 - 12:00
  • Tuesday: 10:00 - 12:00
  • Wednesday: 10:00 - 12:00
  • Thursday: 10:00 - 12:00
  • Friday: 10:00 - 12:00

You do not need to make an appointment but first check which days our offices are closed.

VFS Global in London, Edinburgh and Birmingham

Find out when you can collect your new passport or ID card on the VFS Global website.

You can have your new passport sent to you by registered post (Royal Mail Special Delivery). You will need to pay GBP 8.00 postage.

It is normally not possible to have your new ID card sent to you. But double check this when you submit your application.
