The truth is… and this is from experience… in-wall and in-ceiling speakers tend to increase the value of your home.

In-ceiling speakers are typically better at creating an immersive, surround-sound experience, while in-wall speakers may be better suited for delivering crisp, clear sound for music or dialogue. This is because in-wall speakers are mounted at ear level, which can provide a more direct and focused sound.

Now, to answer the question at hand: Do ceiling speakers need an amplifier? The short answer is yes. Like all speakers, ceiling speakers require an amplifier to function. The amplifier is what provides the power needed for the speakers to produce sound.

For a space less than 50 square meters, the total power of the speakers should be between 20 and 100 watts. In a space between 50 and 100 square meters, look for speakers with a total power of 100 to 500 watts.

Just position them as best as possible to create good coverage. The only area that it is recommended to avoid is a corner or wall. Like any speakers, architectural models are subject to the 'boundary effect' which can make them sound a little boomy if placed close to a large flat surface.

Wiring Requirements

Wire two x 2 core speaker cables from the amplifier to the single stereo ceiling speaker (four cores in total). Connect one cable to the amplifiers left output and one to the right, then connect both cables to the two separate connections on the ceiling speaker keeping red to red and black to black.

Remember: You're daisy chaining the speakers. So you will need three lengths of speaker cable. Run one cable from the positive (+) terminal of the amp channel to the (+) of one speaker. Run the next cable from the negative (-) terminal of THAT speaker to the (+) of the NEXT speaker.

For Atmos systems, Dolby recommends using four in-ceiling speakers. One pair located in front of your listening position, and a second pair behind it. If your system can only accommodate one pair of speakers, mount them slightly in front of where you'll be listening. Don't worry if your speaker placement isn't perfect.

As a rule, we would suggest leaving a gap of at least 2 meters between a left and right stereo speaker. If this isn't possible in a smaller room, you may want to consider a single-stereo speaker positioned centrally.
