For the Frosting

Because it really doesn’t matter what cake mix you use, you’ll want to follow the directions and ingredients needed on the back of the box you are using.

Mine called for 3 eggs and 1/2 cup oil. But yours might be a little different.

Where it calls out the water, just swap in the Prosecco instead. Yum.

There is more than enough in one bottle to make this recipe.

In fact, you’ll even have a few glasses for you to sip on as you make this… or you can try one of these Champagne co*cktails.

To frost the cupcakes, go by your personal skill level.

For me, that is usually putting the buttercream into a plastic zipper bag and cutting the end off and praying for somewhat of a professional-looking frosting swirl.

or you can use a piping bag. It’s up to you. I prefer to have someone else decorate them like I did here…

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of Prosecco do you use?

Prosecco is really just the Italian version of Champagne. You don’t have to buy expensive bottles, but it should be a wine that tastes good on its own. It will be mixed with other flavors but it should be palatable.La Marca is a great price point with a delicious flavor. And they sell it in individual-sized bottles which is perfect for baking.

Can you use a different sparkling wine?

If you don’t have Prosecco you can substitute any other sparkling wine.
For example, you can use sparkling wine made in California, Cava which is sparkling wine from Spain, Moscato (a sweeter Italian sparkling wine), Champagne from France, etc.

Can you add alcohol to buttercream?

Yes! While you can sometimes buy flavorings or extracts that taste like different alcohols, I prefer to use the real thing. I used about 5 tsp of Prosecco to get the flavor I wanted.
