What are the best things to cook in a slow cooker?

Our favorite things to cook in the slow cooker are things that we like extra juicy and tender and can benefit from a long cook time, or recipes with quite a bit of moisture, like these Crockpot Soup recipes.

These are the types of recipes you can start early in the day and let them cook for a long time without sacrificing flavor or texture.

We also love quick slow cooker recipes! These are dinners that we can put on and cook for 2-3 hours if we just need to step out of the house momentarily but will be back to eat dinner.

Recipes like this Slow Cooker Chicken Breast or Crockpot Mac and Cheese are good examples of quick slow cooker recipes we love!

Can you put raw meat in the slow cooker?

Absolutely!

It’s actually very rare that I will sear meat before adding to the slow cooker.

One of the biggest exceptions is ground meat, which really does need to be cooked in advance for the recipe to work well.

As far as different cuts of chicken, roasts, steaks, etc. — these can all be added as is!

There are times you may want to sear the meat first to build flavor, like in this Slow Cooker Pot Roast (which is delicious!), but it’s a step you can skip if you need.

My favorite crockpots and slow cookers!

  • Most often, I’m usinga 2.5 quart casserole style crockpotthat Ilove. It is wider and shallow, so you don’t have to stack everything up and it cooks more quickly. It is the perfect crockpot for someone cooking for 1-4 people and not doing large meals.
  • I also havea 4 quart crockpotthat I use when I want to do a larger cut of meat, like a pot roast, or a big batch of soup. It’s everything I love about my 2.5 quart in a slightly bigger size.
  • I do have a6 quart Hamilton Beach slow cookerthat is great for cooking for a large group of people, but I do find it’s a little cooler and sometimes large chunks of meat have to be cut down into smaller pieces for it to cook by dinnertime.

FAQs

Can I put frozen chicken in the crockpot? ›

Information. It is best to thaw meat or poultry before putting it into a slow cooker. Frozen pieces will take longer to reach a safe internal temperature and could possibly result in foodborne illness. Frozen or partially frozen foods can also cool everything else in the slow cooker.

How do you make slow cooker meals taste better? ›

If you take an extra 10 minutes to sauté the aromatics before scraping them into the slow-cooker, the finished dish will have deeper flavor and better texture. (And some new slow-cookers allow you to sauté right in the insert, so you don't have to wash a separate skillet.)

Can you put everything in a slow cooker the night before? ›

Make-ahead when possible: If your slow cooker has a removable insert, assemble the ingredients the night before and refrigerate the entire insert overnight. It's important to note that starting with cool ingredients may lengthen cooking time (but be sure to keep them out of the temperature danger zone).

Does fat melt in slow cooker? ›

Once your slow cooker is just about full of beef fat, turn it on low. It will slowly start to melt, don't be tempted to rush this process by turning it up.

Why do they call it crack chicken? ›

Lansing, Michigan is home for the Crack Chicken. A great seasoning for all your favorite foods. Started in 2003, customers tried our famous chicken and came back for more. Their addiction to this delicious taste made them call it Crack Chicken, and that's how the name started, and cracked the food industry world.

Can you put raw chicken in a crockpot? ›

Yes, you can put raw chicken in a slow cooker! Slow cookers and Crock-Pots are designed to cook raw meats. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

What happens if you don't brown meat before a slow cooker? ›

"Browning, or caramelizing, meat before putting it into a slow cooker isn't 100 percent necessary, but it is well worth the effort for the most flavorful and full-bodied end result," he says. "The caramelized surface of the meat will lend rich flavor and color to the finished dish."

Can I leave food in a slow cooker overnight off? ›

Is it safe to leave a slow cooker on overnight? The short answer: Yes. slow cookers are made to cook food for extensive periods of time (some can be left up to 24 hours). But, of course, follow safe practices outlined in your instruction manual, and keep the appliance on low or warm, as opposed to high, overnight.

What is the best meat to slow cook? ›

Choose the right cut: Chuck roasts, short ribs, pork shoulders and lamb shanks (think fatty and tougher meats) become meltingly tender with the moist, low heat of a slow cooker. Leaner cuts like pork tenderloin tend to dry out. Likewise, dark meat chicken — thighs, drumsticks, etc.

What are the disadvantages of a slow cooker? ›

Food texture changes: Canned foods, such as vegetables, can become too mushy in a slow cooker. It's better to use them fresh or frozen. But, frozen veggies tend to make the texture of the dish more “watery”. Defrosting and draining the extra liquid before cooking can help minimize this.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Should you leave the house with slow cooker on? ›

Are slow cookers safe to leave on? Yes, it's safe to leave a slow cooker on when you leave the house. The purpose of a slow cooker is to allow you to cook while you aren't home. Slow cookers simmer food slowly, killing bacteria and raising meat to the perfect internal temperature.

What's the difference between a crock and a slow cooker? ›

However, Crockpots generally have ceramic or porcelain pots, while most slow cookers have a metal pot. As with a lot of cooking appliances, the biggest difference comes from the distribution of heat.

What is slow cooking in fat called? ›

Confit refers to the process of slow cooking and storing food in fat. Confit is a French word that means "preserved." In the confit method, meats are cooked in fat for a long time at low temperatures. This renders tough cuts like duck legs more tender, and when stored in duck fat in a cool place, they last all winter.

What thickens slow cooker? ›

Thicken with Tapioca

It thickens everything from luxurious Slow-Cooker Beef Burgundy to Slow-Cooker Southern-Style Shrimp and Corn Stew. A few tablespoons of tapioca added to the slow cooker with the lamb in Slow-Cooker Lamb Vindaloo ensure that the sauce is thick and clingy.

Can you cook frozen chicken before thawing? ›

You can cook chicken directly from the freezer if you're pressed for time, but the method matters. Cooking chicken from frozen works best when you're putting it into soups and sauces, and you'll need to account for cooking times being about 50 percent longer.

When should you not use frozen chicken? ›

Per FSIS-USDA guidelines, if kept frozen continuously, chicken will be safe indefinitely, so after freezing, it's not important if any package dates expire. For best quality, taste and texture, keep whole raw chicken in the freezer up to one year; parts, 9 months; and giblets or ground chicken, 3 to 4 months.

What happens if you cook meat not fully defrosted? ›

If food is still frozen or partially frozen, it will take longer to cook. The outside of the food could be cooked, but the centre might not be, which means it could contain harmful bacteria. Do you check food is thoroughly defrosted before cooking?
